Jasper Solar Power Project

solar panels

SolarReserve, required Owner’s Engineering services for the construction of their project - the largest solar installation in Africa at the time, including the installation of 325,000 PV modules.

The situation

The Jasper Solar Power Project is a USD 260 m 96 MW Photovoltaic (PIC) solar development in Postmasburg, South Africa. The client, SolarReserve, required Owner’s Engineering services for the construction of the project, which was the largest solar installation in Africa at the time, and included the installation of 325,000 PV modules.

Our approach

Our team reviewed the engineering and supervision of the work of the Iberdrola-Group 5 EPC Consortium during construction. We provided engineering design review, construction management, as well as support and interface management with Eskom. We also provided support during the commissioning phase and monitored the first years of output remotely from our Madrid office to check operational performance.

Results

Construction was completed in October 2014, two months ahead of schedule, and the Jasper Power Project was named the 2015 EMEA Best Renewable Energy Project of the Year. It produces 180,000 MW-hours annually, powering 80,000 South African homes through a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom.
