Abengoa required Owner’s Engineering and technical advisory services for the construction of the Khi Solar One 50 MW Solar Power Tower Plant in Upington, Northern Cape, South Africa.
The situation
Abengoa required Owner’s Engineering and technical advisory services for the construction of the Khi Solar One 50 MW Solar Power Tower Plant in Upington, Northern Cape, South Africa. The plant was designed based on Itsus tower technology to capture solar radiation from dual-axis heliostats, and to utilise thermal solar energy. The plant was also to incorporate a steam generator and turbine, an auxiliary boiler, balance of plant systems, electrical systems and control and instrumentation.
Our approach
WorleyParsons in South Africa, supported by the Advisian Madrid renewable hub, provided technical support during the entire project execution process, with particular focus on contract management, claims management, scheduling, grid connection, performance tests and plant acceptance tests. WorleyParsons also provided HSE support, detailed engineering review, and construction and commissioning supervision.
Results
Khi Solar One is the first CSP power plant utilising tower technology built in South Africa. The plant is enabled with 2 hours of thermal storage. Key contributions included both WorleyParsons and Advisian’s local know-how and significant input in the Claims Management process.
