Providing detailed design and procurement packages.

The Situation

The Loulo Tailings Backfill Plant project included a double-stage classification plant, a thickening section ahead of a filtration plant, and an aggregate crushing plant. The backfill product specification required removal of 95% of <5μm material. The resulting coarse tailings are filtered, mixed with crushed aggregate and cement to produce the underground backfill feed.

The project scope was extended to include the establishment of a screening and thickening plant for the treatment of underground sludge.

Approach

We provided the detailed design and prepared the procurement packages for the client. Procurement and shipping were undertaken by Randgold Resources. We worked closely with the shipping agent and were responsible for materials receiving on site.

WorleyParsons was responsible for overall project and construction management, utilising local West African sub-contractors and for commissioning.

Results

The backfill product specification of less than 5% of -5µm material and the need to deliver a consistent product while accommodating fluctuations in feed composition, made this project technically challenging. However, the project was successfully commissioned and is producing backfill to the required specification as per the design.
